How does resistance affect your growth?

There is a phrase that says, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”.

Resistance is your ability to slow down or halt your progress in some form or another.  

So many times in my career I have lead someone to the solution, only to have them resist it.  In fact in my field of work this is fairly common place. A fair amount of my energy is given to supporting people to stop resisting and ‘go with the flow’. Once they let go and stop resisting things start to happen.

People resist because they are attempting to slow down or stop whatever process they are in. This means  that an individual’s ability to resist change, allows them to feel in control. The truth, resisting the natural flow just slows down the growth process and therefore you slow down achieving what you wish to achieve.

 What do people resist?

  • Taking action
  • Knowing the truth
  • Love
  • New learning

Are you motivated by pain or gain?

Are you motivated away from pain, or towards gain?

Some of us in our life may well find ourselves in a mental, emotional and physical pit at times (I know I have) and although we may be happy with some aspects of our life, it can still feel like it is overshadowed by the things we don’t want.

Our focus is key…

Moving away from our discomfort while still focusing upon it will only ever lead us backwards, even if it looks like we are temporarily moving forward. If we only focus on what we don’t want (our old situation) we will give too much attention to it.

What we give our attention to is the direction we head towards, whether we want to or not.

If we want to keep expanding or growing we must make sure that moving towards something becomes our priority and focus. Even if that focus is something we want 'today' within ourselves like,  'I want to feel confident in the now' or 'I want to know myself better'.

Do you want to understand your beliefs?

What is a belief?

Imagine for a moment that you have an unconscious belief tape, and when it plays in your head it acts like a 'theme tune' to your life. This belief tape takes control of your life, it drives all your actions and thoughts. 

When you have activated one of these 'belief tapes' (children a tape is like an mp3 but with tape) you can’t deviate from it, unless you can become conscious of it playing in the background. If you do become conscious of it you then have the opportunity to start a new tape or download (if you prefer)

This requires you to choose a new positive thought, and practice it until it becomes a new belief.

Practicing a new thought takes trust, time, and consistent repetition, until you stop resisting believing it. You need to form a new habit of thought, but once you do you have a new positive 'belief tape' running. A new theme tune to live by.
